CHOCHIN

Japanese paper lanterns.
Introduced to Japan, along with Buddhism, in the late 6th century. Chochin had three distinguishing features: were small and light enough to be carried behind the kimono, durable enough to be used in rain or bad weather conditions, and were believed to protect people against evil spirits.
